Keeping Your Home and Workplace Safe This Autumn

Oct 24, 2022

We’re well into the Autumn months now and approaching the clock change. Meaning darker evenings for us all. Coupled with the more unpredictable weather that Autumn can bring, we’ll all need to take steps to prepare and protect our homes and workplaces over the coming months.

Here are some of our top tips for keeping your home and workplace safe this Autumn.

Prepare your property

With the weather changing you’ll want to prepare your property to withstand the impacts of high winds, heavy rain, and the cold.

Clear your gutters

Gutters filled with leaves and other debris can result in leaks and subsequent damage if not managed. Now is a good time to clear them out.

Check your roof

Check your roof for loose tiles or any other signs of damage. You may need to get a professional in to fix it, but it is likely to be a worthwhile investment. You can stop any potential leaks, as well as guarding against further damage which may be caused by stormy weather.

Prepare your garden

Check your fences

Check your fences to make sure they are sturdy enough to withstand storms and high winds.

Put garden equipment and furniture away

Not only will this protect your belongings from the worst of the weather, but it will also reduce the likelihood of theft if you can store things securely.

Have your boiler checked

It’s a good idea to have your boiler checked over by a professional before you switch the heating back on. They can ensure that everything is working as it should be and that you do not have any gas leaks. Keeping you and your family safe.

It’s a good idea to check that your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are in good working order.

Given the high costs of energy at the current time, you may also want to consider any steps you can take to insulate your home or workplace further. From bleeding your radiators, to draft excluders or insulating your loft, there are many ways you can insulate and draught proof your home.

Review your home and workplace security

Take the time to review your home and workplace security. From making sure you have multi point locking systems on your doors, making double glazed windows a priority to thinking about the way that your property is lit. All these things can make your property less attractive to thieves.

If you have an alarm, CCTV system or security lighting in place then do check that everything is in good working order.

Many people are now also installing smart doorbells which have cameras. They can help you see who is at the door without answering it along with other security benefits.

Protect your vehicles

You’ll also want to take steps to protect your vehicle from theft. Thefts are typically more common during the hours of darkness. So, with shorter evenings and longer hours of darkness this will be something you will want to be mindful of over the coming months. Read our tips for reducing the risk of vehicle theft.
