Dedicated Home Renovation Insurance
Your current home insurance policy may not cover you for home renovations. To ensure you’re covered throughout the home renovation process, you should consider a dedicated home renovation insurance policy.
How Does Home Renovation Insurance Work?
Many things can go wrong during a home renovation project. Some of these things may not be covered by your current home insurance policy. Home renovation insurance can cover the cost of repairs should anything disastrous happen over the course of your renovation project.
You will almost certainly need home renovation insurance if you’re carrying out major structural work on your home, such as an extension or a loft conversion. But you should also consider getting a dedicated policy for smaller scale projects. For instance, your home insurance policy may not cover you for floods that occur when you accidentally drill into a water pipe.
What Does Home Renovation Insurance Cover?
Renovation insurance can cover you for:
- Structural damage to your property that goes beyond the scope of your current home insurance policy.
- Additional losses you may experience as a result of the renovations. For example, your home may be more vulnerable to fire, theft, or break-ins while the renovations are taking place.
- Non-negligent party wall liability is an important area of cover. If your neighbours allege that your renovations have caused damage to their property, they may make a claim against you. In UK law, the renovator is liable for all damages in such a situation, even if nobody has acted negligently. Your home renovation insurance policy can cover this liability, which can bring essential peace of mind for both you and your neighbours.
- Employer’s liability insurance. If you’re undertaking the renovations yourself and hiring some contractors to help you, your policy can even include employer’s liability insurance. This will cover any personal injuries that may occur onsite during the work.
Unoccupied Home Renovation Insurance
If you plan to live elsewhere during your home renovation, you will need dedicated unoccupied home renovation insurance. This will cover the increased risk of fire, flood, or theft whenever there is nobody onsite to supervise your home.
Most home insurance policies only cover occupied homes. If your home is unoccupied for an extended period of time – which can be as little as a month – then your home insurance will no longer be valid.
Do I Need Home Renovation Insurance?
As we’ve seen, your current home insurance policy will probably not cover you for your home renovations. And there is so much that can go wrong during any renovation project that it really isn’t a good idea to proceed without some form of cover.
You might have a budget for your renovations, and you might even account for going slightly over budget. But are you prepared for the worst case scenario? What if an entire wall of your house collapses while you’re knocking through for an extension? What if your plan to remodel your basement results in subsidence issues?
In these cases, the costs of repairs could exceed even the most carefully calculated home renovation budget. Your home insurance policy wouldn’t cover these costs, but a dedicated home renovations policy would.
Long story short – if you’re planning any kind of renovation project, then you absolutely should consider getting a specialist home renovation insurance policy. It will provide an extra safety net, and total peace of mind that you’ll be covered should anything go wrong.

FAQ’s
Some of our most asked questions, answered below:
When might I need High Net Worth insurance rather than a standard Home insurance policy?
If you have personal assets (excluding the value of your home) over £100,000, it’s likely that a High Net Worth insurance product would give you better protection than a standard Home insurance policy. This is particularly true if you have a number of high value items in your home, such as a jewellery or watch collection, antiques or a classic car.
HNW insurance tends to have higher sum insured limits overall as well as higher limits for individual items of particular value.
Can I cancel my temporary car insurance?
You can cancel your policy at any time but due to the short nature of this policy there will be no refund of premium. For learner policies of less than one month an administrative charge of no less than £25 will apply.
Policies with a duration of more than one month can be cancelled and a refund will be given less a charge for the days cover has been provided. A minimum administration charge of £25 will also apply.
What type of driver's licence do I need for temporary car insurance?
To take out temporary car insurance you will need a full UK licence or EU/EEA licence. For Learner Driver insurance you will need a UK provisional licence.
Can I buy temporary car insurance to export a vehicle outside of the UK?
No. Under the cover that the insurer provides, all journeys must begin and end in the UK.
Can I buy temporary car insurance to retrieve an impounded vehicle?
No. Our insurance cannot be used on vehicles that have been seized, impounded, or taken by the police.
How much does one day car insurance cost?
The price of one day car insurance varies depending on a number of factors. These include the value of the car, where you keep it, and what you do for a job.
Can I get temporary car insurance to cover me for my practical driving test?
Yes, subject to meeting the assumptions and eligibility criteria for the insurer.
Can I get temporary car insurance to cover my SORN vehicle?
As long as your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition, and you either have tax or will tax the vehicle with our insurance certificate, you can insure your vehicle for this purpose. The vehicle must have a current MOT or you must have a pre-booked MOT appointment to attend whilst insured with us for the insurance to be valid.
Can I take out temporary car insurance to insure a car that doesn't belong to me?
Yes - you can insure a car that doesn't belong to you. But you must have the owner's permission to use the vehicle before purchasing a policy.
