Temporary Learner Driver Insurance
If you have a provisional driving licence, and you’re aged 17 – 25, we can get you temporary learner driver insurance for as long as you need it – whether that’s just for an hour, or for up to four weeks.
This means you can get comprehensive cover for any practice driving you do outside of your lessons, so you won’t have to worry about getting an annual policy until you pass your test.
Why Do You Need Temporary Learner Driver Insurance?
It’s illegal to drive without car insurance. This applies to all drivers, including learners.
You don’t need to worry about car insurance when you’re learning with your driving instructor, as they should take care of cover for you. Yet you will need to sort your own insurance out for any driving you do outside of your lessons.
Learning to drive can be expensive enough already, so you probably don’t want to take out an annual policy just to cover the few hours of driving practice you do while preparing for your test.
That’s where we come in. We can get you affordable and flexible temporary car insurance to cover you for any driving you do outside of your lessons.
What Does Temporary Learner Driver Insurance Cover?
Our temporary learner driver insurance will cover you for learning to drive in your parent’s car.
If you’re learning in your parent’s car, your temporary learner driver insurance policy will be separate to the car owner’s annual policy. This means that, if you need to make a claim on your learner insurance policy, it will not affect your parent’s no claims bonus. So, a learner driver insurance policy brings peace of mind for everyone!
The cover is comprehensive, which means it includes cover for:
- Fire and theft
- Liability for third party damage or injury
- Accidental damage
- Personal belongings
- Lost keys
- Transport and accommodation expenses in the event of a breakdown
What Else Do I Need To Learn To Drive?
When you’re learning to drive in your parent’s car, you’ll need someone to supervise you for any driving you do outside of your lessons. This person must be aged 21 or over, and they must have had their full driving license for at least three years.
On top of this, the person supervising you must be qualified to drive the type of vehicle you’re learning to drive. For example, if you’re learning to drive a manual car, the person supervising you must also be qualified to drive a manual car.
You’ll also need L-plates for the front and rear of your car.
Get Affordable and Flexible Temporary Learner Driver Insurance Today
We can get you affordable and flexible temporary car insurance to cover you for any driving you do outside of your lessons. The comprehensive cover can last for as little as an hour, or for as long as four weeks at a time – however much cover you need to pass your test.

FAQ’s
Some of our most asked questions, answered below:
When might I need High Net Worth insurance rather than a standard Home insurance policy?
If you have personal assets (excluding the value of your home) over £100,000, it’s likely that a High Net Worth insurance product would give you better protection than a standard Home insurance policy. This is particularly true if you have a number of high value items in your home, such as a jewellery or watch collection, antiques or a classic car.
HNW insurance tends to have higher sum insured limits overall as well as higher limits for individual items of particular value.
Can I cancel my temporary car insurance?
You can cancel your policy at any time but due to the short nature of this policy there will be no refund of premium. For learner policies of less than one month an administrative charge of no less than £25 will apply.
Policies with a duration of more than one month can be cancelled and a refund will be given less a charge for the days cover has been provided. A minimum administration charge of £25 will also apply.
What type of driver's licence do I need for temporary car insurance?
To take out temporary car insurance you will need a full UK licence or EU/EEA licence. For Learner Driver insurance you will need a UK provisional licence.
Can I buy temporary car insurance to export a vehicle outside of the UK?
No. Under the cover that the insurer provides, all journeys must begin and end in the UK.
Can I buy temporary car insurance to retrieve an impounded vehicle?
No. Our insurance cannot be used on vehicles that have been seized, impounded, or taken by the police.
How much does one day car insurance cost?
The price of one day car insurance varies depending on a number of factors. These include the value of the car, where you keep it, and what you do for a job.
Can I get temporary car insurance to cover me for my practical driving test?
Yes, subject to meeting the assumptions and eligibility criteria for the insurer.
Can I get temporary car insurance to cover my SORN vehicle?
As long as your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition, and you either have tax or will tax the vehicle with our insurance certificate, you can insure your vehicle for this purpose. The vehicle must have a current MOT or you must have a pre-booked MOT appointment to attend whilst insured with us for the insurance to be valid.
Can I take out temporary car insurance to insure a car that doesn't belong to me?
Yes - you can insure a car that doesn't belong to you. But you must have the owner's permission to use the vehicle before purchasing a policy.
