How Much is Home Renovation Insurance?

Aug 7, 2025

Your standard home insurance policy probably won’t cover you for renovation work. But specialist home renovation insurance can cover your home for all of the additional risks associated with renovation projects.

In this post we will discuss how much you might expect to pay for home renovation insurance, and explore some factors that may affect the cost of cover.

If you have any questions about your home insurance needs, or if you want a free quote on renovations insurance, get in touch by calling 0208 290 9086 or emailing personal@anthonyjones.com.

What is Home Renovation Insurance?

Renovation insurance is a specialist policy which can cover you for the additional risks associated with renovation projects of all sizes. A renovation insurance policy will often cover you for:

  • Structural damage
  • Fire, theft or break-ins during renovation work
  • Contents cover
  • Non-negligent party wall liability
  • Employer’s liability cover
  • Unoccupied home cover

For more about whether you need home renovation insurance and what it covers, read our guide to home renovation insurance. We also have a guide to why you should tell your insurer about any renovation project of any size.

How Much Is Home Renovation Insurance?

Unfortunately, so many factors can affect the cost of home renovation insurance that it’s simply not possible to give any sort of ballpark figure.

Here are just some of the factors that might affect the price of your policy:

  • Your home – Your home’s current value, as well as the rebuild value of your property, can affect the cost of your home renovation insurance. The more your home is worth, and the more it would cost to rebuild, then the more you might expect to pay.
  • Your location – There are a number of ways your home’s location may affect the price of your policy. For example, your home may be more vulnerable to theft throughout the renovation. So if you live in an area with relatively high crime rates, this may result in higher premiums.
  • The nature of your renovation project – The more elaborate your renovation, the more your cover will cost. Refitting your bathroom, for example, will probably cost less to cover than building an extension. Insurers may ask you to specify the estimated cost of your project, and they may use this figure as your cover limit.
  • The length of your renovation project – The longer your project will take to complete, then the more you will pay for cover. Insurers will also want to know if you intend to vacate your home for the duration of the project. This is because there are certain risks associated with leaving homes unoccupied.

How To Get The Best Value Home Renovation Insurance

  • Compare quotes – Different insurers will charge different amounts for their cover. Get a number of quotes, but don’t be tempted to just go for the cheapest option. Getting the cover you need is more important than saving money.
  • Consider the nature of your renovations – The more you understand your renovation project, the easier you’ll find it to get good value renovation insurance. You should have a budget in mind, and you should take the time to understand the specific risks you’ll need to cover.
  • Think about your timescale – Your home renovation project may take significantly longer to complete than you expected. Essentially, this means that you should overestimate the cover you need, and the length of time you need it for. This way you’ll be covered even if things go over budget and over scale.

Get The Best Value Home Renovation Insurance: Use An Insurance Broker

A good insurance broker will take the time to understand your renovation project, and will be able to advise you on all the possible risks you might face. They can then help you get exactly the cover you need at the best possible price, with enough flexibility to ensure you won’t be out of pocket if things don’t quite go to plan.
