Managing Risks Linked To Lithium-Ion Batteries

Sep 21, 2022

Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in many household rechargeable items. Think laptops, mobile phones, electric bikes, e-scooters through to e-cigarettes.

On the whole, and if used properly they are safe.

But there are some instances where these batteries can present a possible fire risk.

According to the London Fire Brigade this can include instances such as

  • if the battery becomes damaged
  • if the battery is overcharged
  • if the battery short-circuits
  • if the battery is submerged in water

Manage the risks linked to lithium-ion batteries

Given how many of us will own items which make use of Lithium-ion batteries, then the potential fire risk is something we all need to be aware of.

The London Fire Brigade have issued this advice about safely charging devices which make use of Lithium-ion batteries, and it is certainly worth familiarising yourself with. As well as this specific safety advice linked to electric bikes and e-scooters.

The London Fire Brigade also make the point about avoiding counterfeit electrical chargers. And this is something we would emphasise. In the last couple of months, we are aware of a house fire caused by an overheating mobile phone charger. Unfortunately, it turned out the charger in question was an imitation of a branded product. This highlights the risks associated with buying copies rather than original replacements as poor quality can lead to dangerous outcomes.

Have the right insurance in place

As well as taking steps to manage fire risks, you’ll also want to ensure that you have adequate insurance in place to protect your home from fire damage. Consider both buildings and contents insurance (which you need will depend on whether you own your property or rent it).

It is also highly likely that you will have devices which make use of Lithium-ion batteries in your workplace. So, if you are a business owner, you may want to take the time to educate your staff on safe charging. As well as reviewing your business insurance coverage for your business premises.
