Can I Take a Rental Van to a Tip?

Yes, you can take a van to the tip. However, there are certain rules you need to be aware of first. Most tips and recycling centres treat vans as commercial vehicles – even if it’s a rental van, and even if you’re using it to dispose of household or garden waste.

This usually means you’ll have to apply for a permit before you can take your van to the tip, but check your local tip’s rules, as some have exceptions for rental vans or non-commercial vans like campervans.

Do I Need a Permit To Take a Van to the Tip?

Yes, you may need a permit before you can take your van to the tip. However, every UK council has its own rules. Some councils might have no problem with letting vans visit tips. Others will be very strict with their permits.

Don’t worry – permits are usually free if you’re just looking to dispose of some household or garden waste. Yet you will have to apply for a permit in advance.

For more information about the rules in your local area, visit your council’s website. You can quickly find your local council using this handy government search tool.

Taking a Van to the Tip – Will I Need to Book?

Again, all councils are slightly different. For some tips, you should be able to simply show up whenever you like. Others will require you to book your visit in advance.

Once again, visit your local council’s website to find out what rules apply in your area.

What Can I Take to the Tip?

Your local council’s waste and recycling services will specify what items you can and cannot take to the tip. Most kinds of household waste are fine. You can read a full guide to what counts as household waste.

You’ll need to apply for a specific permit if you want to dispose of any commercial waste, as well as for any waste created from construction and demolition projects, such as plaster and masonry. Though household permits are usually free, you may have to pay for these other permits.

What Can’t I Take to the Tip?

Most tips prohibit the same kinds of items, which usually includes:

  • Scrap vehicle parts.
  • Soiled pet blankets and beddings.
  • Gas cannisters.
  • Fire extinguishers.
  • Petrol and other fuels.

How Many Tip Visits Can You Make?

Many councils now set strict limits on the number of tip visits residents can make in a given period of time, whether that’s in a car or a van. In some areas, you may be limited to just 12 visits in a calendar year.

Make sure you check the rules in your local area before you set out. If you plan on making multiple visits in a single weekend, for instance, you may accidentally use up your allowance before you’re done!

Are There Any Other Rules For Hire Vans?

Some councils don’t set any specific rules for hire vans. But others can be pretty strict in terms of the number of permits they issue each year, and how long these last.

Other councils may set limits on the size of the van you’re allowed to bring. You may not be allowed to bring any vehicle larger than 2.2 tonnes, for example, so make sure you check the rules before you finalise your rental.

Beware of Fly Tipping!

You can either take your waste to a council-run tip, or to a private waste disposal site.

If you’re taking your waste to a private waste disposal site, make sure the site has the relevant permits for waste disposal.

Disposing of waste without a permit counts as fly tipping, which is against the law. And if you use an unregistered waste disposal site, you might be personally liable for any subsequent fly tipping charges. So don’t take the risk!
