What is Uber Fleet?

Uber Fleet is a scheme allowing vehicle owners to rent their cars out to Uber drivers.

How Does Uber Fleet Work?

Here’s how it works:

  1. You sign up as an Uber Fleet partner, and list all of your available vehicles on the platform.
  2. Once you’re registered, Uber drivers can browse vehicle rental options, and get in touch with you to arrange a rental agreement.
  3. You and the Uber Driver will agree on terms, and the driver will then rent your vehicle for a set period of time.
  4. While the driver uses your vehicle to earn fares from Uber passengers, you can either get a percentage of the driver’s earnings, or you can earn rental income on the vehicle.

Uber Fleet Partner Requirements

To register as an Uber Fleet Partner, you will need to provide the following:

  • ID Card
  • A Business Tax Registration Certificate
  • Your Private Hire Vehicle Licence.
  • A bank statement in your company name.

Head to the official Uber Fleet Partner site to register.

Uber Fleet Vehicle Requirements

Every vehicle you want to use as part of your Uber fleet must meet certain standards:

  • A Private Hire Vehicle Licence. You can apply for this from your local council.
  • Your vehicle’s model year must be in line with the local licensing authority requirements. Usually, councils will specify that only cars that were manufactured in a certain timeframe may be used as private hire vehicles.
  • The car must be a 4-door car, or a minivan. Plus, it must be licensed to carry at least four passengers.
  • The vehicle must be in good condition with no cosmetic damage, and no commercial branding.

There are additional vehicle requirements if you want to operate in London.

Uber Driver Requirements

As an Uber fleet partner, you don’t really need to worry about the driver requirements. Drivers will register separately with Uber, and they will only be able to browse vehicle rental options once they’ve gone through Uber’s screening process.

Uber’s driver requirements are as follows:

  • Aged at least 21.
  • With a valid UK Driving Licence, and an appropriate private hire licence.
  • Able to provide certain documents as proof of ID, such as band statements, insurance documents, and photos.

In addition to this, Uber drivers must complete virtual onboarding courses, along with in-person “activation appointments”.

Insurance for Uber Fleet Vehicles

Uber will provide the framework for registered drivers to rent out your vehicle. It’s your responsibility to provide the vehicles. It’s also your responsibility to get adequate insurance for these vehicles, and to stay on top of the vehicle tax, and the ongoing maintenance.
