Can I Borrow A Friend’s Car, and How Do I Do It?

Jan 13, 2025

In this post we’ll discuss the ins-and-outs of borrowing a friend’s car. But, long story short, the quickest and most convenient way to get the cover you need is through getting temporary car insurance.

At Anthony Jones, we can help you get temporary car insurance to give you full cover for as little as an hour, or as long as 28 days. For more information, call us on 0208 290 9086, or email us at personal@anthonyjones.com.

Can I Borrow a Friend’s Car?

There are no laws against borrowing a friend’s car. All you need is:

  • Your friend’s permission.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Adequate car insurance.

Am I Insured To Drive My Friend’s Car?

Not necessarily. Comprehensive car insurance policies used to include cover for driving other cars (DOC). This gave you third party insurance for driving other people’s cars. However, DOC cover is not as common as it used to be. Check your car insurance policy to make sure you have this form of cover. If you do not, you will have to arrange to get more cover to drive your friend’s car.

Who Does DOC Cover?

If your friend has DOC cover on their car insurance policy, it does not mean that you can drive their car without getting your own insurance! DOC cover insures the policyholder to drive other cars. It does not insure other drivers to drive the policyholder’s car.

Becoming a Named Driver on Your Friend’s Car

If you intend to regularly drive your friend’s car, then you can always become a named driver on their policy. This will give you the same level of cover as your friend. So, if they have comprehensive cover, so will you.

Become a named driver and you can drive your friend’s car as often as you like. However, you must not drive the car more than your friend. They must remain the “main” driver. If they do not, it will count as “fronting”, a form of insurance fraud that could invalidate your friend’s policy.

Getting Temporary Insurance To Drive Your Friend’s Car

Becoming a named driver on your friend’s policy might feel too inconvenient, and too costly, if you only intend to borrow your friend’s car for a short period of time.

The most straightforward and cost-effective way to get the cover you need to borrow your friend’s car is with temporary car insurance.

With temporary car insurance, you can get all the cover you need for as long as you need it – whether that’s just for an hour, a day, a week, or a month.

Temporary car insurance gives you the same cover you’d get with a comprehensive car insurance policy. This includes cover for:

  • Fire and theft
  • Liability for third party damage or injury
  • Accidental damage
  • Lost keys
  • Personal belongings
  • Alternative transport and accommodation expenses following a breakdown
