How to Start a Fleet With Uber

Mar 14, 2025

The Uber Fleet system allows you to rent your car to Uber drivers. Some do this to make a little extra money on the side. Others invest in multiple vehicles and become full-time Uber Fleet managers.

In this post we will outline how you can start a fleet with Uber, whether you own one vehicle, or several.

At Anthony Jones, we can help you understand and prepare for all possible risks your Uber fleet might face with our specialist taxi fleet insurance services. For more information, call our dedicated team on 0208 290 9099, or email CM@AnthonyJones.com.

What is the Uber Fleet System?

If you own your own vehicle, or a number of vehicles, you can become an official Uber Fleet partner. This means that registered Uber drivers can use your vehicle to complete trips on the Uber app. You and your Uber drivers will agree on a rental agreement, and you can then either get a percentage of the driver’s earnings, or you can get rental income on the vehicle.

How Much Do Uber Fleet Managers Earn?

The amount you make will depend on:

  • The number of vehicles you register for the Uber Fleet system.
  • The specific terms of your rental agreement. Bear in mind that you should set something up that benefits both you and your drivers, or you’ll struggle to get any takers.
  • The amount of fares your driver completes. In this way, your driver’s behaviour and performance can also make a difference. If your driver has a low rating, then they will get fewer bookings, which could mean you’ll get less income.

How to Start a Fleet With Uber

First, you will need at least one vehicle, and this vehicle must meet certain requirements set by both Uber, and your local council:

  • It must be either a four-door car, or a minivan.
  • It must be in good condition. This means no cosmetic damage, and no commercial branding.
  • You will need a Private Hire Vehicle Licence, and this licence must allow you to carry at least four passengers.
  • Your council may specify that only vehicles manufactured within a certain timeframe can be used as private hires.
  • If you want to operate in London, you may have to meet certain other vehicle requirements.

How to Register Your Vehicles With Uber

Before you register as an Uber Fleet Partner, you will need:

  • An ID card.
  • Your Private Hire Vehicle License for whichever area, or areas, you want to operate in.
  • A Business Tax Registration Certificate.
  • A bank statement in your company name.

Registering Your New Fleet Business

Because you need to supply tax registration certificates and business bank account details, you need to register as a business before you can register as an Uber Fleet Partner.

Once you’ve registered your business, you will take on certain administrative and financial responsibilities. For example, you will be required, by law, to keep good financial records. And you will need to submit a Self-Assessment tax return every year.

Managing Your Uber Fleet

You will be responsible for managing every vehicle in your Uber Fleet, and every driver who rents your vehicles.

Fortunately, Uber offers a lot of support here. Uber’s dedicated Fleet Management hub has tips and tools to help you maximise your earnings, with free analytics to help you keep tabs on all of your vehicles and drivers at all times.
