Road Safety Week 2019: How to Get Involved

Nov 18, 2019

Road Safety Week 2019 is taking place between the 18th-24th November. Organised by the charity Brake, Road Safety Week is an annual event which aims to promote road safety and encourage people to take actions to improve road safety.

At Anthony Jones we are passionate about road safety for all users and believe risk management should be a big focus for all of our fleet customers.

How can you get involved with Road Safety Week 2019?

The theme of Road Safety Week 2019 is ‘Step up for Safe Streets’.

According to statistics from Brake ‘Every 20 minutes, someone is killed or seriously injured on a British road and each of these tragedies is preventable.’

As a result, in 2019 Brake want everyone to get involved and learn about the solutions which are available to improve the safety of all of our journeys. This may be vehicle safety technology or speed limits which adequately match the safety requirements of roads.

There are many opportunities to get involved, from making donations, signing up for a free action pack to making a Road Safety Week display to promote the initiative.

How can fleet managers promote road safety in the workplace?

Road Safety Week is all about everyone stepping up to improve road safety, so this of course includes organisations and businesses.

Brake is encouraging organisations to ensure they ‘use safe system solutions’

This could include telematics systems so that driver behaviour and safety can be measured, and any issues addressed. It could be ensuring that your vehicles are as up to date as possible and make use of advance driver assistance systems e.g. automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning systems, or rear view parking cameras to name just a few.

As well as using the right technology, it is also important to ensure that your culture promotes road safety. Drivers should be given realistic targets to avoid rushing and inevitable accidents which arise from such behaviour, you should have a strict policy around mobile phone use whilst driving and ensure that drivers keep use of hands free systems to an absolute minimum.

Whilst safety should be a focus all year round, why not take the chance during Road Safety Week to review your processes, culture and systems and see if there is anything you can do to improve your fleets commitment to ensuring safety for all road users.

Anthony Jones specialise in organising fleet insurance, whatever the size of your fleet. We also believe that risk management is a key part of the process and can work closely with you to identify areas which may need addressing. If you have any questions then don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
