What Does a Loss Adjuster Do?

Feb 11, 2025

If you make a claim on an insurance policy, your insurers may appoint a Loss Adjuster as part of the claims process.

In this post we will explain what a Loss Adjuster does, and how they differ from Loss Assessors.

If you have any questions about the claims process, or any other aspect of your insurance, contact us on 020 8290 9080 or email personal@anthonyjones.com.

What is a Loss Adjuster?

A loss adjuster is an independent professional who insurers hire to assess an insurance claim.

Loss adjusters will work to investigate the circumstances surrounding the claim. For an example of how this might work in action, consider a claim involving a house fire. In this case, the loss adjuster will visit the property and perform an independent assessment of the damage while calculating a total cost for the loss.

At the same time, they will gather evidence to determine the cause of the fire. Loss Adjusters work to validate claims. This means they will review the policy wording to ensure that the policyholder was indeed covered for the claim they are making.

How Does a Loss Adjuster Work?

Loss adjusters will use a range of techniques to assess insurance claims. They will conduct onsite inspections, taking photographs and measurements to determine the extent of the policyholder’s loss.

They may also conduct interviews with certain individuals, including the policyholders, witnesses, and contractors, to try and get a more complete picture of the circumstances surrounding the claim.

Having established the validity of a loss they will co-ordinate contractors to make good the damage.

Who Do Loss Adjusters Work For?

Loss Adjusters are appointed by insurers, and as they work to validate claims, some seem to think that they are used by insurers to try and limit the amount they have to pay in settlements. There is nothing wrong with insurers wanting to make good damage at the most economic cost but to be clear Loss Adjusters are professional, independent, fair and impartial. Policyholders should look to collaborate with Loss Adjusters to streamline the claims process. This might include sharing any documents that the loss adjuster requests, answering any questions they may ask, and giving the loss adjuster access to the property should a site visit be necessary.

If you are concerned that a loss adjuster may not be working in your best interests, you could always appoint a loss assessor to work on your behalf. As in life, sometimes there is disagreement as to the best course of action.

What is a Loss Assessor?

Where a Loss Adjustor might represent an insurer, a Loss Assessor represents the policyholder.

As part of a claims process, Loss Assessors can help policyholders get the best possible outcome. Claims solutions can be complex so having your own professional to liaise and to challenge Loss Adjusters working on behalf of insurers can be useful.

Loss assessors can also liaise with loss adjusters – and the insurers who appoint them – to ensure the claims process goes as smoothly as possible.
