Worst Roads for Speeding in the UK

Jan 27, 2025

All fleet managers know that some roads in the UK are more dangerous than others. In this post we’ll discuss the worst roads for speeding in the UK. We will also explore some ways you can manage the risks of speeding among your fleet drivers.

What Are The Best and Worst Roads For Speeding in the UK?

Driver risk management specialists Quartix maintain a “safe speed database”. This is a real-time log of the relative speed of thousands of drivers across the UK gleaned from Quartix’s advanced fleet tracking system.

The latest figures from this database provide an idea of the worst roads in the UK for speeding. The five roads with the highest percentage of speeding drivers are:

  • M6 Toll, Junctions T6-T5
  • M61, Junctions 6-8
  • B4590, Whillenhall
  • B2199, Petersfield
  • A4098, Walsall

Understanding and Managing the Risks of Speeding

While there are certainly dangers to speeding, Quartix’s data-driven approach to road safety serves to highlight the importance of context in defining safe speeds. For example, their data demonstrates how many fatal accidents take place on rural roads, and yet drivers rarely exceed the speed limits on these roads.

Plus, Transport Scotland is currently looking to increase the speed limit for HGV drivers in Scotland. They reason that a higher speed limit for HGVs will allow drivers to travel at an optimum speed for longer, which can reduce driver stress and frustration while making it less likely that other drivers will attempt risky overtaking.

Quartix’s tech helps fleet managers understand their drivers’ Relative Speed Scores. This is a more rounded picture of a driver’s performance, as it compares their speed not just to the speed limit of the road they’re driving on, but also in relation to other drivers on the road.

The system generates colour-coded reports to help you keep tabs on any drivers who routinely drives at dangerous speeds. It also provides insights into other potentially dangerous driving habits, such as harsh braking and acceleration. You can use this data to identify drivers who may need extra training and development, or other interventions.

More Ways To Manage Your Drivers’ Behaviour

Investing in fleet management tech, and offering additional training where necessary, is not the only way you can improve driver behaviour in your fleet.

As well as intervening with drivers who exhibit poor driving behaviour, you could also look to reward any drivers who demonstrate consistently good driving habits, or who achieve the biggest improvement in their performance.

A dedicated driver rewards programme is an effective way to get all of your drivers onboard with your efforts to improve safety standards across your fleet. Read our full guide to driver rewards programmes.
