Can driverless cars see around corners?

Mar 16, 2018

Imagine if cars could see around corners. They could anticipate unexpected obstacles in the road, such as someone riding a bike or a horse, or a child playing in the road. How much safer that would be for all road users.

It sounds a bit far-fetched and futuristic, but fortunately, new imaging technology from Stanford University means this may become reality sooner than you think. The system under development uses lasers to build a 3D image of unseen objects. The technology still needs some refining and can currently take up to an hour for the process to complete. It’s also less effective in bright sunlight and with reflective surfaces. However, the team working on it believe that better hardware will soon help to overcome these issues.
