Motorhome Security – What Security Steps to Take to Protect Your Motorhome

Jan 16, 2025

In this post we’ll share some tips to keep your campervan or motorhome safe from thieves.

Theft is a big risk for motorhome owners. According to some reports, around 4,000 caravans, campervans, and motorhomes are stolen every year in the UK.

If you really want to keep your motorhome safe, you’ll need some dedicated motorhome insurance. We can help you get the cover you need at the best price. For more information and a free quote, call us on 0208 290 9099, or email Commercial.Motor@AnthonyJones.com.

Take Care Where You Park Your Motorhome

The safest place to park your motorhome is in a secure, locked garage. But if this isn’t possible, a driveway is the next best option. If you must park your motorhome on the street, at least do so somewhere that’s well lit.

Invest in Home Security

Get security cameras, alarms, and motion-activated floodlights for your home. These can deter thieves, and in the event of a theft, the police may be able to use the camera footage to make a conviction.

Motorhome Security Options: How to Protect Your Motorhome

A number of things will help protect your motorhome:

  • Wheel clamps and a steering wheel lock, which will prevent thieves from driving your motorhome away.
  • Extra strong locks for your motorhome’s windows and doors. Standard motorhome locks can be easy to break. Deadlocks act as a strong physical deterrent.
  • Alarms for the windows and skylight. Your motorhome’s in-built alarm system may not be triggered by a thief forcing a window open.
  • A dashcam, which can work like CCTV in deterring potential thieves.
  • A GPS tracker, which police can use to locate your vehicle in the event of a theft. According to police figures, 95% of motorhomes fitted with a tracker are ultimately recovered.

Register Your Motorhome

With the Central Registration and Identification Scheme, you can register your motorhome on a national database. You can then apply “microdots” to key parts of your motorhome. These contain unique codes which can help police identify your vehicle if it’s ever stolen.

Once you’ve registered, get a sticker for your motorhome, saying something like: This motorhome is registered and marked; or This motorhome is fitted with a tracker. This can act as a strong deterrent to thieves.

Don’t Take Security For Granted

Finally, there are a few things you can do that might seem obvious, but they can make a huge difference in keeping your motorhome safe.

First, don’t leave any valuables on display in your motorhome, as these could attract opportunistic thieves. Consider getting a safe box for your motorhome should you take any expensive items, such as cameras or laptops, on your travels.

Second, always be sure to securely lock your motorhome when you’re not around. Even if you’re just going to be stepping away for a few moments, take the time to close and lock all of the windows and doors.

Motorhome Security Can Help You Save On Your Insurance

Take all of these steps to secure your motorhome, and you could save money on the cost of cover. Insurers calculate premiums based on risk, so if you reduce the risk of theft, they may reduce your premiums.
