We’ve looked at a few price comparison sites and found that campervan insurance can start from as little as £150 a year, however, depending on a number of factors, you could pay as much as £1,200.

Working with an insurance broker may help you save money on the cost of cover, as a broker will work to find you a policy that truly meets your needs, rather than an off-the-shelf policy.

What Affects the Cost of Campervan insurance?

A number of things can affect the price of campervan insurance:

  • The type of vehicle you drive. No matter what type of insurance you’re looking for, no two vehicles will ever cost quite the same to insure.
  • The type of insurance you want. Third party, third party with fire and theft, or fully comprehensive.
  • Optional extras. You might have to pay extra for things like windscreen cover and personal belongings cover.

What Types of Campervans Cost More to Cover?

In the UK, there are three categories of campervans and motorhomes – Class A, Class B, and Class C. When it comes to insurance, Class A campervans may cost more to cover than Class B or C campervans.

You can read our full guide to the different categories of campervans.

Class A campervans are those luxurious American recreational vehicles (RVs) which can be up to 40ft long. Insurers will consider these particularly high-risk vehicles, as they cost so much to buy up-front, and because any repairs are likely to cost a lot. So they may charge you high premiums to cover this increased risk.

Vintage or “classic” campervans and motorhomes may also cost more to insure than newer models. This is because:

  • Again, any repairs are likely to cost a lot of money.
  • They may be more attractive to thieves.
  • They’re less likely to be fitted with modern driver assistance technology, including ABS, which may make accidents more likely.

How Can Your Personal Circumstances Affect The Cost of Campervan Cover?

These factors may also influence how much you pay for motorhome insurance:

  • Your history as a driver. If you’ve ever had to make a claim on any other vehicle insurance policy, it may drive up the cost of your campervan insurance. This is because insurers may view you as a high-risk driver.
  • How you use your campervan. The more you use your campervan, the more you’ll pay for cover. If you only drive it once or twice a year, you may not pay as much as you would if you were to treat your campervan as your “main” vehicle.
  • If you can store your campervan in a secure, lockable garage, you may pay less for cover than you would if you keep your campervan parked on a public street.

What Are The Different Types of Campervan Insurance?

  • Third party – This is the absolute minimum level of cover you need to legally drive on UK roads. In the event of an accident, it will cover the cost of compensating others for injuries or damages. You’ll have to pay for all damages to your vehicle yourself.
  • Third party with fire and theft – This gives you all the cover you’d get with a third party policy, but with added cover for if your campervan’s stolen, or damaged or destroyed by fire.
  • Fully comprehensive – This can cover you for almost anything that might happen to your motorhome. For example, if you’re involved in an accident, a comprehensive policy can cover all damages to your motorhome as well as third party property – even if the accident was your fault.

A third party policy will cost you less than a fully comprehensive policy. But as you’d be expected to pay for any repairs your vehicle needs following an accident, third party cover many not be the most cost-effective choice.

What Optional Extras Can I Get on Campervan Insurance?

Your insurer may offer a range of optional extras, all of which will affect the price of your policy:

  • Breakdown Cover – You may also want specialist European breakdown cover.
  • Personal Belongings Cover – For all the pricey items you may keep in your campervan, including televisions, microwaves, bicycles, and so on.
  • Specialist Cover – You may have to pay extra to cover things like gas cannisters and heaters, for example.
