What Will Affect the Cost of Travelling Europe in a Campervan or Motorhome?
Before we give any ballpark figures, first bear in mind that numerous factors will affect the cost of your trip:
- Inflation and the exchange rate – Different things cost different amounts at different times. The exchange rate can also vary from day-to-day, so you’ll have to account for changing pounds into Euros or other currencies – and back again.
- Cost of living – Some countries are simply more expensive than others. A trip through France and Spain, for example, will cost a lot less than a trip across Scandinavia.
- The length of your trip – The longer you travel, the more you’ll have to pay for fuel, for food, and for other expenses. Also, the very roads you travel on can affect the overall cost of your trip. Toll roads are very common on the continent.
- The type of campervan or motorhome you drive – Some campervans and motorhomes are more efficient than others. Two different campervan models could make the same trip, covering the same distance on the same roads, but pay vastly different amounts for fuel. Also, the type of campervan you drive can affect the amount you’ll pay in campervan insurance.
- Where you stay – You could stay in campsites, or aires, or in free “wild camping” spots. All of this will make a difference to your budget.
- What you do – Got any activities planned? The more you do, the more you’ll pay!
Budgeting Your Expenses for Travelling Europe
Also consider whether these are daily, weekly, monthly, or annual expenses.
Expenses to consider include:
- Food and drink
- Clothes, toiletries, and other essentials
- Fuel (petrol, diesel, as well as whatever you use for heating, hot water, and cooking)
- Insurance (including European breakdown cover)
- Other necessities (MOT, servicing, repairs etc.)
- Accommodation (for campsites and aires)
- Transport (ferries, tolls etc.)
- Sightseeing and entertainment
How Much Does It Cost To Travel Europe in a Campervan or Motorhome?
Certain dedicated campervanners like to write about their experiences in travelling Europe, and many of them keep detailed records. We’ve read a few accounts of the average price of touring Europe, and we believe these are reliable ballpark figures for how much you might expect to pay:
- £50 – £100 per day.
- £350 – £700 per week.
- £1,500 – £3,000 per month.
- Around £20,000 per year.
But of course, you might end up paying significantly less – or significantly more! – depending on all of those factors we mentioned above. A week or so spent wild camping in France will cost considerably less than a month or so spent touring the finest campsites in Scandinavia, for example.
